THANK YOU to April and Scott!
WELCOME to Diane, Jim and Linda!
After many months of online only meetings, our Life Beyond Breakup group is hosting a monthly in-person gathering! Every third Sunday all are welcome to join this support group from 3-5 pm in the purple Parlor across from the church office. LBB has been a lifeline for many over the years, and we are so glad they’ll be back in the building! MTPC member Elaine Huber is the current coordinator.
Introducing you to our new Taborspace Manager, Talbot Wallace!
This information is from his application:
As a seasoned, approachable, and community-oriented professional with extensive experience in hospitality management and
event coordination, I would be pleased to support your team and the full range of events and audiences you serve.
My vast knowledge in the daily operations of a bustling local destination with a diverse clientele, along with my dedication to community building, and exceptional customer service skills would be an excellent addition to your
mission of cultivating community and providing a welcoming gathering space for all.
I am pleased to say that I am one of those lucky people who got to spend nearly two decades working in a job that I loved. As General Manager of the Portland Hawthorne Hostel, I was immersed in the world of travel and travelers for 16 amazing years. Not only was I able to learn from an amazing mix of guests from around the globe, but I wholly embraced our mission of promoting tolerance, respect, and understanding through the love of travel. My role as General Manager gave me the opportunity to support, train, and oversee a broad range of employees, as well as experience in communicating with board members and stakeholders. It also provided me with a breadth of skills related to facility management, organizational budgeting, community outreach, and partnership building.
Places and spaces that promote community-building are near and dear to my heart. In addition to efficiently and successfully managing every aspect of the hostel’s daily operations, finances, staffing, and maintenance, I also led the Hawthorne Hostel to be a community fixture through our recurring events and sustainability programs. In addition to our entertainment and educational programming, I am proud to have secured a $120,000 grant for the hostel to create a rainwater harvesting demonstration system and one of Portland’s first eco-roofs. These features provided ongoing educational opportunities and resulted in our hostel being honored as both the #1 Eco-Friendly Hostel in the World and the Most Efficient Hostel in the World.
It is important to me as an individual and as a professional to work with an organization that also understands the value of connected communities, diversity, and “third places” and seeks to foster these values in authentic and meaningful ways. As with much of the travel industry, Covid turned the hostel world upside down and this eventually led to the heartbreaking decision of permanently closing our doors. Not one to sit idle, I have enjoyed using this transitional period to spend more time with my family while also undertaking my long-time dream project of designing and building an eco-friendly tiny house. I have always trusted that the perfect opportunity for me to return to the traditional workforce would present itself when the time was right. And thus I am truly excited to be applying for this position in my very own neck of the woods with your team at Taborspace.
Along with my previous hospitality management experience and excellent communication skills, I am reliable, versatile, collaborative, and always have a sense of humor! My management style is inclusive and growth oriented, and I truly enjoy working with and supporting people of all backgrounds and ages. . Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely, Talbot Wallace
As April, the Building Hosts and I have been onboarding Talbot this week, he is proving to be as advertised. WELCOME TALBOT!!
This is what I did with 100% of my vacation! Sullivan (Sully) and I snuggled for hours every day while his parents got some sleep, ate actual meals, and even showered. I was channeling the support I wish I’d had when my 3 were newborns, with the grandparent benefit of sleeping 8 hours a night between baby shifts. Really a luxury.
Thank you for your prayers for Sully who was 3 weeks premature, had some lung issues at birth, and his mom who had some blood pressure concerns postpartum. Everyone is now healthy and thriving, if not sleeping as many hours as they would like. I have a sister-in-love who is a doula coming in for the 7-10am shift of baby holding while the parents sleep and I am in Portland. I am so grateful!! It does take extended family, if not an entire village to raise a child.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday! — Pastor Sandy
